The Nicene Creed

Adopted in the face of the Arian controversy at the First Council of Nicaea (325), the Nicene Creed, modified as the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381, clearly states and affirms the biblical doctrine of the Trinity.

The Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381. (1662 BCP)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things, visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only begotten Son of God,
begotten of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven.
He became incarnate by the Holy Spirit
of the virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
according to the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He shall come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son
he is worshipped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
I acknowledge one holy, catholic and apostolic church,
and one baptism for the remission of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
